Barbara Büchner deals in fantasy and horror. Her stories are narrated in the Gothic tradition, but transposed to modern-day settings. Shadowy cemeteries, dark catacombs and gloomy houses contribute to an atmosphere of eeriness that is seasoned with love, eroticism, humour and a tinge of reflectiveness. Born in 1950, Barbara Büchner works as a freelance novelist and journalist in her home city of Vienna. She has written fifty books to date, including fantasy, horror and crime, as well as children’s books and non-fiction. Her work has been published by Rowohlt, Piper, Heyne and Ueberreuter. Her latest novel, Der Pestarzt (‘The Plague Doctor’), is set during an outbreak of the plague in nineteenth-century Vienna. She is an author of wide-ranging talents who has won numerous prizes for her work, including the Austrian State Prize for her journalistic writings.
