Deadline of Death

“If you find out within 48 hours why I have abducted this woman, she will remain alive. If not – she will die.” With this telephone call a sinister game starts.

In each of the catacombs of the cathedrals of Munich, Cologne and Leipzig a female body is found. The killer starves his victims to death, he drowns them in ink, burns them to death or immures them in concrete while still alive. Sabine Nemez, a young criminal investigator, has a terrible suspicion: Could there be a connection between the killings and the gloomy children's book Struwwelpeter? But who is behind it all and what is his motive?

Soon the killer’s track leads the investigators to Vienna. Here, he has once again started to play his perfidious game, this time with the psychotherapist Helen Berger. But this time, he has chosen the wrong victim. Helen manages to turn the table – and she is on the brink of unveiling Struwwelpeter’s identity.

Are these really accidents? Evelyn’s search for evidence leads her to the North Sea. In a special institution for psychiatric conditions in Leipzig: When Natascha is found dead in her room, everything seems to point to suicide. Commissioner Walter Pulaski, however, has his doubts: One sentence in the suicide note, which was discovered in Natascha’s knickers, seems mysterious: “There are always others that come to me by night.” Shortly afterwards, when Pulaski hears of similar deaths in other hospitals across the nation, he comes to the conclusion that this is the work of an intelligent killer, haunting teenagers with psychiatric conditions. On his search, Pulaski also finds himself in Bremerhaven …

The insurance detective Peter Hogart finds the videotape before the killer gets hold of it and therefore becomes a target himself. On the tape, however, nothing can be seen but nine minutes of a black and white sequence: a woman in a wheelchair, going through a shabby room in a hospital…
